The Purpose of the Tournament
Tournament is one of the opportunities where trainees may test their
skills that they have
established from everyday training. Although tournament cannot measure
every aspect of
Karate skills, nor its purpose is to determine the best Karate-ka, but
it is neverthelss the one of few opportunities to put yourself under
the pressure and test the correct execution of techniques under such
environment.
Important Tournaments
There are 3main tournaments that our region looks forward to join. The
tournament that we look forward to the most is the JKA/WF America
Nationals/Collegiate Championship. The top athletes from each Region
and College who won through the sectional and regional tournament will
compete against each other. Competition is composed of both form and
sparring, and there are individual and team for both.
The second tournament that we look forward to is more known as the "JKA
WF/A Camp". It is one week training camp in New Mexico. Several guest
masters are invited to this camp, and there usually is a Goodwill
Tournament that anyone may join at the end of one week. People from
several countries joins this tournament, and it is a great place to
increase the ring of Karate. For this reason, the tournament is very
important because we are able to build stronger friendship and trust
through the matches, and we are also able to compete against several
different types of athletes from all over the world.
Inernational Tournaments
There are two major international tournaments
in JKA. The first tournament is the
Pan-American, which is invitational-only tournament that is among
North, South America and Carribean countries. The competitors of this
tournament are the teams of best athletes from those countries. This
tournament encourages many countries to strive for harder training, and
observing the great techniques from many athletes. In this sense, the
tournament is not only about winning, but researching athletes and
techniques. Most importantly, it opens the door to the next step as a
goal for many athletes.
The second and the largest tournament that JKA has is the World Shoto
Cup, now renamed to Funakoshi Gichin Cup. It is the tournament that
allows top athletes from all over the world to compete against each
other, and it also gives an opportunity for judges to judge in a large
scale tournaments. It is purely a great goodwill tournament that allows
interaction among all Karate trainees, and the skills of those athletes
are purely top of the world.
